The legal landscape in Ottawa

Ottawa hosts both provincial and federal courts. The Superior Court of Justice and Ontario Court of Justice sit at 161 Elgin Street. The Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Court, and the Federal Court of Appeal are all headquartered here, which draws a concentration of constitutional, immigration, and tax specialists. Every Ontario-side lawyer is licensed by the Law Society of Ontario; lawyers practising on the Quebec side of the National Capital Region (Gatineau) are members of the Barreau du Québec. Legal Aid Ontario runs an Ottawa office at Elgin Street for family and criminal matters.
